The book of the making of the Greenwich Millennium Embroideries
"Stitches in Time", edited by Mary-Jane Cattle and Audrey Ringrose, celebrates the unique achievement of the Millennium Embroiderers of Greenwich whose beautiful work is now on permanent display at the Greenwich Heritage Centre at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich. The book features full-page colour photos of the eight panels with keys to details.

It includes an artistic evaluation of the embroideries by Beryl Platts, local historian and writer; Maureen Black's account of her own role as director of the project; an appreciation of the part played by Beverley Burford and of the unique contribution of Sally Jenkinson together with examples of her designs; a personal reaction from Sir Antony Jay, Sally's brother, on first seeing the panels and many lively reminiscences from the embroiderers themselves.

There is an account of the history depicted on the panels and a record of their exhibition appearances. The formation of the Friends of Greenwich Millennium Embroideries (FOGME) is described and donors to the fund for display cases listed. An account of the continuing legacy of the Millennium Embroideries includes the Jubilee Panel and the on-going work on the Olympic and Paralympic Panel for the 2012 Games by fashion students at Greenwich Community College with illustrations of their work.

The book contains biographies for most of the embroiderers together with samples of their work and a list of stitches and techniques used in the making of the Greenwich Millennium Embroideries.

Whether you have already seen the Embroideries or have this treat still in store, "Stitches in Time" will enrich your experience by telling the human stories behind the embroidered scenes.
